Bimi Kaiho Restaurant

2 Peck Seah Street #01-01 Airview Building

4 years ago, acting on a tip-off from my sister, I went to the restaurant (then still situated at Outram Park, opposite SGH) with my friend. I believe that nobody would ever think of visiting the place except those working in the vicinity. Firstly, it is isolated from the main road, hidden snugly in a corner of the HDB shops. Secondly, it looks run down on the outside, quite a turn off for even the hungriest person alive. But once, you overcome your fears, it is a totally different world inside.

The restaurant has a family feel to it. With the majority of the patrons being Japanese, it makes you feel as if you are in Japan itself. For a reasonable amount, you get to choose from a variety of dishes conjured by the resident Japanese chefs. The place never fails to satisfy me every time I'm there. I remember on the first visit, 3 Japanese families were having a feast on the tatami area... Sushi, sashimi and sake were constantly flowing to their table. Until about 10pm, one of the patrons (obviously very drunk) started stripping (to the last bit) and flexing his muscles for everyone in the restaurant. The other embarrassed members quickly subdued him, to the dismay of some. That was one heck of a meal. The menu offers a range of appetizers, men, udon, sushi and beverages. A typical bento set would cost about $20. My favourite dish is still the shishamo - always done to perfection. Mmmmm.

Today, the restaurant has moved to Peck Seah Street. Much of the ambience is retained but one can't help feeling that it has become more commercialized. Nevertheless, it is one of the better Japanese restaurants that I've visited.
